The HP Deskjet 1050 All-in-One is ideal for those home computer users who want to do more than just print out photos, documents and pictures. This printer allows you to do a lot more than just basic printing. It’s one of the better every day home office printers and is available from good technology outlets such as Rymans. It allows printing, scanning and copying.

This printer is stylish, compact and affordable. It’s great for home offices because it can sit on a desk or slot into other cabinets and pull-out drawers. The set up is incredibly easy as the instructions are written simply, without jargon. This printer can print in black up to 600dpi, in colour up to 4800x1200dpi and really is excellent quality. Sharp and clear, there are no bleed lines or smudging. The printer’s controls are intuitive and this allows for easy printing, so no messing around under tables! The printer also prints in colour brilliantly, as demonstrated when printing out photos, which print out perfectly – no stray pixels or colour overlays.

Copying and scanning is just as easy, and it is possible to scan pages from books effectively – often the benchmark for judging whether a scanner is worth its salt. This is great for those who need to photocopy a lot, such as students and those who work from home. It scans quickly and the image appears on screen in a matter of seconds.

The printer does not come with a USB cable, but as long as you are aware of this before you buy it, it is quite simple to go ahead and buy one. A massive plus point for this product is that it is energy efficient; it powers up very quickly and shuts down instantly, so is wonderfully green and eco-conscious. Black and colour cartridges are supplied allowing you to start printing straight away. Very highly recommended.

CMYK, Colour Charting

By Celeste Yates

Not to be confused with CMKY, the perfume, CMYK stands for Cyan, which is a type of blue, Magenta, which is a sort of mix between pink and red, Yellow, and Key, which is black. CMYK is also known as a Process Colour or the Four Colour.

It is the standard color model used in offset printing, or for full colour documents. Another type of model is the RGB. RGB stands for Red, Green, Blue, and works on a completely different setting than CMYK. This is due to the fact that CMYK is a subtractive model, while RGB is an additive one.

Most people are not even aware that these two models exist, or that their computer even thinks about these things. However, in the world of desktop publishing, these two different types of color models are essential knowledge to the know how of a design.

To switch a design/image from one to the another might not cause too much of a change on your screen, but when it comes to the print out, the shades will be hugely different in comparison. CMYK uses half tones to mix the other colours, where as RGB does the standard colour arrangement we learnt as children; ie: mixing red and blue will equal purple.

CMYK is generally used mostly for print outs, as the colour and saturation is better then on the RGB. However the latter is better when it comes to presenations on the computer.

For people that are in the industry or work with computers, knowing the difference or knowing about CMYK is common knowledge. The way people incorporate it into their conversations would make a person who didn’t know, not want to ask as it does seem and is becoming standard knowledge. You might as well ask why is the sky blue (although most people don’t know the answer)

But there is a whole other side to CMYK, which involves light, wavelengths and other dimensions. However, the only people who generally know about this are ones that are involved in the printing industry.

The computer and designer industry has never affected our lives as much as it does today. Knowing such terms as CMYK, RGB and even DPI (Dots Per Inch) has become just as important as knowing the latest news and when lunchtime is.

And if you are as lucky as myself, with your parents giving you the initials, CMY in your name, jokes such as “you are just one colour short of an International colour chart” haunt you for most of your life.

Digital Printing

By Krishna Prasad

What is Digital Printing?

Digital printing is a modern printing technique that produces prints directly from a computer file rather than a slide or a photograph, without going through some intermediate medium such as a film negative, a colour proof or a plate. Digital printing is used for many commercial printing needs in both black and white and full colour. Some specialist commercial digital printing companies can also offer:

• large format printing such as posters, signage, canvas and acrylic prints

• extra wide printing for large scale external applications such as banners, advertising billboards, hoardings and building wraps.

Today digital printing is being increasingly used in place of older forms of printing such as litho. It is easy to understand why when you look at the many advantages digital printing offers:

Advantages of digital printing

Digital printing has many advantages, the main ones being faster turnaround and lower production cost. It is often used for on-demand or short-run colour printing. It is very cost-effective on short print runs owing to the low set up costs and the fact that there are no minimum volume restrictions. Other advantages include:

• Choice of processes some of which can be used for high definition printing applications

• Printing can be done on many different substrates

• Waterproof and fade resistant inks can be used

• Suitable for printing materials for interior or outdoor use

• Any size can be printed including large format and extra wide format

Digital printing processes

There are various processes which can be used for digital printing, the choice of which is determined by the application and intended use. Among them are:

INKJET PRINTING produces photo-realistic graphics with brilliant colour intensity. Its versatility makes it a good choice for large format display graphics. Inkjet printers use CMYK inks to produce full colour and can print onto a wide range of media so this process is suitable for both indoor use and outdoor use.

UV PRINTING is a high quality and cost effective large format full colour printing process. The process uses environmentally friendly UV inks which are cured with UV light, making it very resistant to fading, water resistant and abrasion. It is ideally suited for outdoor graphics as it can cope with all weather conditions. There are two types of UV full colour printing:

• roll fed – where graphics are printed onto a roll of media such as PVC or fabric

• Flatbed – printed directly to rigid or flexible, flat surfaced substrates, often PVC Foamex boards or ACM (aluminium composite material).

LAMBDA PRINTING uses laser technology to produces the highest resolution display graphics for top quality photographic prints on photographic paper, film or Duratrans. It is ideally suited for large format display graphics as it gives sharp photographic images, continuous tone and high-impact colour prints.

Wide range of substrates

Digital printing produces very high definition images on a wide range of materials of different thicknesses, weights and finishes including photo paper, vinyl, film, mesh, canvas, and various textiles. Digital flatbed printers can also print directly onto most flat surfaced rigid or flexible substrates including: PVC Foamex, ACM (aluminium composite material), acrylic, corrugated board, polycarbonate, polyboard and card.

Digital printing applications

• Banners – often used for outdoor advertising and event signage. Usually printed on vinyl which is the least expensive using for weather resistant inks.

• Posters – widely used in trade shows and the retail sector as very cost effective way to promote a company, product or service. Can be printed on matte, satin or gloss paper in various sizes.

• Photos -can be printed on paper, fabrics and rigid materials such as poster board or foam core.

• Canvas Print -look almost as good as an original and can be used to reproduce top quality fine art or photographs. Available on standard canvas or artist canvas material and can be mounted on wood frames.

• Signage – depending on whether it’s meant for interior or outdoor use, it’s printed on vinyl papers, translucent materials, fabrics as well as rigid materials such as poster board or foam core.

• Mesh Printing – Used mainly for stage backdrops and on buildings, mesh is a lightweight perforated fabric that is resistant to tearing and very strong, ideal for large exterior banners. Mesh material is flame retardant and directly printable using UV and solvent inks.

Full Colour Promotional Mugs Look Fantastic

By Dan Toombs

Full colour promotional mugs look fantastic. That is only one reason why they are one of the most popular advertising items available. Brilliant colours, advanced printing techniques and new finishes are keeping colour promo mugs at the top of everyone’s list for business gifts and special event gifts.

On top of beautiful full colour reproductions, finishes have special processes also. Use frosted over glass, laser etching, iridescent, 3D or embossing for extra flair. Leaving no area untouched, it is also possible to do printing inside the mug.

There is a broad range of creativity that can be applied for production of full colour promotional items. Use graphic design, text, photographs or a combination of all three for striking results. With protective hard finishes, designs are destined to last a very long time. Mugs are made from durable materials like glass, earthenware ceramic and hard plastic. Adding colour is another way to make these marketing tools even more effective.

Styles include rounded shapes, tall, extra large, mini and custom shapes. Most have handles, and some have covers. Covered travel mugs are nice for taking along hot drinks on that morning commute without worrying about spills or burns.

Imprinting can include text, images, graphics or all three together. A new finishing treatment has taken the public’s attention. Heat change mugs are all the vogue today, with images that remain hidden until a hot drink is added inside. Suddenly, a plain but attractive mug becomes something entirely new and fun.

There are new printing processes that allow for almost perfect photo reproductions on these promotional items. Colour matching is at its best. State-of-the-art printing processes make using different processes like direct screen printing, transfer printing, digital printing and dye sublimation as easy as printing on paper stock.

Finishing touches are possible for adding banding, gilding or splashes of colour to the mugs. Extra features include printing on the bottoms and insides. Just think of the mug as a small piece of very hard stock that will carry forth your message for a very long time.

Full colour promotional mugs look fantastic. Colours are vivid and bright and make this promotional item stand out no matter where it is displayed. Use for fundraising or profit in stores and at events. Schools, government organizations, charitable bodies and sports teams all benefit by creating custom logo mugs.

There are few products that are more effective at pleasing most people than attractively decorated mugs. Use them throughout the year for excellent promotions!

All of the popular promotional mugs mentioned in this article can be viewed and purchase online at compugift.co.uk. We ship worldwide.

Full Colour Business Cards to Represent Your Business

By Jim Cunliffe

One way to make your business cards stand out from others is to create them in full colour. Most business cards will contain very little colour, if any. You might see a bit of variation in paper colour, and even less in the colour of inks used. If you decide to use full colour on your cards, you can be sure they will make an impression.

The first thing to be aware of is that full colour cards now days can cost quite a bit less than traditional cards (because full colour cards can be batch printed). If your business cards budget is very limited, or you are in a very conservative field, full colour may be the best way for you to go. If however, your brand is spot colour specific, then they could cost a lot more. If you are in a field where any kind of creativity or innovation is valued, full colour will make quite an impression.

Colour can be used in a few different ways. One way is to incorporate it into the logo portion of your business cards. You can also have the background of the cards be full colour against a darker font. You will want to carefully choose the background and make sure it fits your business. You also do not want it to be distracting.

The information printed on your business cards should still be the primary feature. Photographs are another way colour can be used. Again, you will need to consider if using a photograph is beneficial and appropriate. If you are a photographer, then you may want to consider a printing process know as scholastic printing. This is were the dot of ink printed to the board is variable, which gives a smoother, higher quality print.

Using lots of colour can be a great way to make your cards stand out. Think about how you can incorporate it into the design and make a big impression.

There are other print techniques which do not involve traditional print to consider. Metal business cards is an option. Your text and logo can be etched onto the surface of the metal business card. This is very effective and rather costly.

Foil embossed or foil blocked cards are also very luxurious. These tend to be printed on a thick Colour plan board, which is very thick and heavy.

Cheap, Full Colour Flyer Printing

By Dominic Munroe

Printing a large quantity of flyers can be expensive, if you are not looking in the right place. Some businesses not only charge by the number of flyers, but also charge per colour used in the printing. This type of printing can really add up, quickly, when you are trying to create something that will catch a customer’s eye. This is why you should take up full colour flyer printing services! Printing prices are not only cheap, but you also do not have to pay a different price depending on how many colours you are using! By using flyer printing services, you will be able to print a full colour flyer, no matter the number of colours on the prototype. It is the the same price! The only difference in price is whether or not you want it printed on one side or two. This is a feature that truly sets full colour flyer printing aside from other types of printers!

By choosing to print a flyer, you are provided with an overwhelming amount of choices. You are not limited to just one colour, shape, or size of your product. You can print thousands of original flyers for an affordable price. They are a great way to promote your business and catch the attention of other potential customers. They also add a touch of professionalism to your projects. Remember, a simple black and white, text-based hand out is not going to grab the attention of a customer like a brightly coloured, large flyer with included graphics.

What is a Print Broker and What Do They Do?

By Steve Laker

In much the same way that other commodities can be brokered (insurance, mortgages, pensions etc.), so too can print: that’s what print brokers or managers do.

They act as an out-sourced sales solution to their trade-only suppliers. Those suppliers maintain low overheads by – among other means – not employing dedicated sales staff of their own: they out-source sales on a part-time basis to print management companies. Those companies then represent a “collective” of printers, who together offer a complete printing solution.

Traditionally, you’d buy business cards from one supplier, brochures from another and large-format graphics from yet another. To free up their resources and save them having to shop around, many customers employ companies do it for them: all in one place.

For example?

As well as providing a one-stop solution, management companies are used for many other things:

A complex project, which would normally involve several suppliers with different areas of expertise? Free up your resources to concentrate on that project and out-source the printing to a service provider.

Exhibiting at a show or fair? Similarly, concentrate on the logistics and leave the printing of business cards, exhibition graphics and stands, leaflets and flyers to a Brokerage.

Print brokers don’t have any printing presses?

No. They are management companies, utilising the varied and diverse equipment of their equally varied and diverse supplier base. they’re just like a huge print company which can produce anything that their customers require: they represent the entire industry.

The industry is so varied and diverse that no individual printer could hope to serve the entire market competitively. They’d have down time on their presses and so on. Print brokers take a number of trade-only suppliers, with diverse equipment able to serve the whole market, package it up and bring it to the market as a complete solution.

Is this a new market niche?

Print brokers and managers have been around for a while. In fact, some of the most successful companies in the industry don’t have any presses of their own.

How can a print manager or broker be the cheapest, quickest and most environmentally friendly, as they often claim?

They scour the market for their customers to get the best deal. They make sure that each project is produced on the most appropriate equipment and because they have a wide ranging supplier base, they have access to just about any printing press you’d care to think of. No individual printing company would be able to address every printing need but brokers can, through their diverse supply chain. They keep prices down by using trade-only suppliers and maintaining low overheads of their own. Their extensive supply base means that they can always find the right supplier for the job: this benefits their suppliers by making a contribution to their overhead and it benefits their customers because of the reduced rates which they are able to acquire printing for.

Often though, a customer requirement will be very specialised or time-sensitive. In these instances, price is not necessarily the primary concern.

In these instances, a print broker’s customers will approach them because they don’t know where else to go. They could undertake a lengthy search for the most appropriate suppliers but to free up their resources, they employ a management firm. As well as a general print management service, these companies are able to offer a service wherein their supply base allows them to provide pretty much anything, any time. They’re print managers and exist as an out-sourced procurement service to their customers.

Who are print managers’ customers?

Their customers include individuals, members of the public, sole traders, small, medium and large companies; government departments, local authorities and charities.

In any case – whether sole trader or multi-national corporation – each of their customers are equally important to them and customers use print managers or brokers for the service which an out-sourced supplier can provide in procuring their printing.

How do print brokers make money?

As a business, a print broking company naturally needs to remain a profitable concern. They maintain low overheads by not having their own printing equipment, among other means. They procure goods on behalf of their customers through trade-only suppliers who have low overheads themselves: they don’t employ sales staff (they out-source that operation to management companies) and they occupy premises in geographical areas where business rates are competitive (typically out-of-town).

Print brokers apply a modest margin to their trade purchasing prices and their prices to the end-line user are representative of those which their customers would find in the commercial market; often less so. A managed or brokered printing service is value-added and a print manger or broker’s diverse supplier base allows them to be a one-stop solution to their customers, saving those customers the cost and resource of employing a dedicated buyer.

Who are a print broker’s competitors?

Commercial printers and High Street-based print shops. Neither do what the other does but print management companies offer what both do and more besides. A print broker’s managed print solution means that they can offer their competitors’ services in one basket; often at a reduced cost.

How can print management companies be better than traditional printers?

Many traditional print companies try to offer the one-stop solution which print brokers do but they have higher overheads. Therefore, all non-core business which they outsource will come at a premium. They also don’t have the resources to have researched their non-core business market thoroughly enough, nor usually sufficient staff to offer the level of service which a dedicated management company offers on out-sourced work. Print managers and brokers are dedicated to a constant awareness of the market and the changes therein, to consistently offer their customers the best printing solution.

Because they out-source all of their customers’ projects, the print broker’s internal resources are free to manage their customers’ printing for them.

Why don’t customers deal directly with a management company’s suppliers?

Because print brokers’ suppliers only deal with the trade (managers and brokers). If they were to deal directly with customers, they would need to employ sales staff and incur the salaries and indirect costs associated therewith. They can’t justify such an expense with their individual, specific offerings, so they out-source their sales on a part-time basis to print brokers, along with other suppliers offering different goods and services.

Why wouldn’t a print broker’s suppliers approach a customer directly?

Because they don’t have dedicated sales people and employ printing management companies in that function. From a print manager or broker’s point of view, if any of their suppliers were to adopt such a practice, they would deny themselves the other leads which might otherwise be introduced to them.

Who is responsible for “managed” printing?

The print management company are: even though they’re print managers – middle men – the buck has to stop somewhere and as far as the customer is concerned, that buck stops with the service provider. Otherwise customers may as well deal directly with the manager or broker’s suppliers and for reasons given above, they really don’t want to do that. Brokers provide a complete managed print service, which extends to total responsibility for customers’ printing: they can approve proofs on-press, so that customers don’t have to; advise on pre-flighting customer files and are ultimately responsible for their customers’ printing and all that’s entailed therein.

Why would a customer deal with a broker and not a “traditional” printing company?

Because print managers and brokers represent a one-stop solution for all of a customer’s printing needs. Rather than shop around many printers for the best deal and most appropriate production medium, print brokers do that for their customers.

London Print Brokers are a Business Process Out-sourced complete print procurement solution.

London Print Brokers act as an out-sourced sales solution to trade-only suppliers. Those suppliers maintain low overheads by – among other means – not employing dedicated sales staff of their own: they out-source sales on a part-time basis to London Print Brokers. London Print Brokers then represent a “collective” of printers, who together offer a complete print solution.

Traditionally, print buyers would buy – for example – business cards from one supplier, brochures from another and large-format graphics from yet another. To free up their customers’ resources and save them having to shop around, London Print Brokers do it for them: all in one place.

Choosing Leaflet Printing, a Task to Look From Both the Sides

By Shalu Uthara

The term ‘leaflet’ generally refers to folded paper with certain information printed on it. It is also known to be a brochure. A leaflet has usually more than one side while a flyer is a one-sided printed page. Flyers are often printed on heavier paper causing leaflets more economical.

Leaflets or brochures are generally used for advertising purposes so good quality printing is required for good value. Thousands of companies and organizations use leaflets to advertise. Whether you are an owner of small business that needs additional advertising about a sale or other business event or a church who conduct programs each week, leaflet is used in every need. Doctors, nightclubs, plumbers, estate agents, restaurants and all other businesses make use of leaflet printing to advertise to the local community. They can also be used for mass mailing. Choosing leaflet printing company that delivers the best work is the key to success of your promotional advertising.

Most of the leaflet printing companies give you a range of choice for the printing. For example, you may go for a flat version or for a folded style for better information display. The art of making choice entirely depends on your use and need of leaflet printing.

You must chose a company owing professional graphic artists to come up with a neat and catchy look. The prints that have neat and bright displays are the ones that catch the eye. Remember the text which is to be used in your leaflet can literally make or break the design. It has to be easy and at the same time attractive. The plain and boring text will certainly be overlooked and may not grab the attention as per your desires.

Before choosing your company make sure to give a look to its portfolio. The works from the past scale your expectations for the design. Choose the one which is open for communication about your leaflet designs, artwork, and text so that it becomes easy to work with. A company that avoids your calls or takes too long in returning your message is not a company that is dealing in good business.

Leaflet printing services surrounds craftsmanship and go service. The end product should be delivered to you in the amount of promised time. Make sure you have your choice to get the kind of leaflets you want. Utharaprint.com is a place where you can place an order, approve the proof, await the delivery of the finished leaflets and enjoy the benefits with time.

Colour printing in the 21st century

Full colour printing is, as the term suggests, the creation of a graphical image, photograph or text in colour. The alternative is black-and-white or monochrome printing. Of the two, colour printing is far more effective at making a statement, whether it’s a photograph in a brochure, a company logo on a business card or a textural statement on an event flyer.

In order to understand how full colour printing is achieved, it helps to understand the optical physics underlying it. In school art lessons, we are told that the 3 primary colours are red, blue and yellow. However, for printing purposes the primary colours are red, green and blue. Any colour image or photograph can be optically broken down into these three colours, which mixed in different percentages will create the perception of the full colour spectrum.

The secondary colours – printing inks

Combined equally, the three primary colours create the colour white. Removing one of the colours and combining the other two in equal proportions produces what is known as a secondary colour. Thus red and green produce yellow; red and blue yield magenta (a kind of purple), and green and blue create cyan, which is a turquoise colour. These are the three basic colours used in full colour printing, familiar to anyone with a colour computer printer. Black, added to create darker hues, is called the key colour.

Yellow, cyan and magenta are known as the three basic secondary colours. Unequal mixtures of these – plus black – produce lifelike reproductions of all the colours seen in nature – of which there are literally hundreds. Of course, in printing this is all very carefully controlled. Printers use a system called the percentage colour, or CMYK chart, CMYK being short for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and black.

Every hue on the chart is expressed as a percentage of each colour i.e. c%, m%, y% and k%. The colours are visually displayed next to these values as colour swatches. Officially, there are only 16 named colours in the system, the rest being expressed as hexadecimal codes. However, many people use descriptive naming terms as well. Pure black, for example, is expressed as: c0%, m0%, y0%, and k100%. The colour popularly called amethyst is quoted as c0%, m32%, y16%, and k38%.

The colour separation process

A common method for full colour printing, colour separation begins by separating the original coloured image into its red, green and blue components. Today, this is done by digital scanning, but previously it was done by photographing the image through a series of filters. In either case, the result is three greyscale reproductions, each representing one of the three primary colours i.e. red, green, and blue.

The next stage involves inverting these images to produce cyan, magenta and yellow separation negatives. Black separation is also used to clarify tones and create shadow and contrast. Another cutting-edge process, called computer-to-plate technology, combines lasers with dot-matrix screen-printing.

Modern digital printing processes do not have the single colour space restrictions of traditional CMYK methods. Colour matching techniques enable incredibly realistic full colour printing of images to be made.
